Austrian Grand Prix™ Travel Packages
What makes the Austrian Grand Prix a standout event in the Formula One calendar?
It could be the incredible countryside and mountains that surround the Red Bull Ring circuit, which provide a dramatic contrast to the noise and speed of the Grand Prix. In 1987 these worlds collided, as a deer wandered into the path of McLaren’s Stefan Johannson during the Friday practice. It could be the passion of the local fans, who in the 1950s went as far as to race on their own replica of the track, marked out with cones and hay bales. The Austrian Grand Prix is packed with off-track entertainment, including displays by the Red Bull Skydive Team and the Flying Bulls Helicopter Display Team. Expect a fantastic atmosphere everyone can enjoy. Or it could be the circuit itself, with its unique high-speed corners that set up a race like no other. Redeveloped and renamed in 2011, it’s one of the shortest in F1 and has the fewest corners - just 10, but together they offer a wide range of conditions and driver challenges. It’s an event F1 fans just have to attend in person. And if you’re going to travel, you’ve got to do it right. We’ll show you three different ways to make an unforgettable Austrian Grand Prix trip - by staying in the beautiful city of Graz, near to the circuit, or in one of Austria’s many stunning self-catered chalets. Whichever you choose, we’ll also help you plan your travel and choose your tickets. Let’s get started! |
Getting to the Austrian Grand Prix
You’re probably going to want to fly to the Austrian Grand Prix, and there are four airports relatively close to the Red Bull Ring.
Klagenfurt Airport is the closest, being a 1 hour 25 minute drive away. However, Klagenfurt mainly serves Austrian domestic flights, so you’ll probably need to change in Vienna. This will add to your travel time.
Vienna itself is only 2 hours 15 minutes from the circuit, while Salzburg is 2 hours 30 minutes away. All three are good options for flying into.
Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, is another option. The city itself is only a 1 hour 15 minute drive from the circuit, but expect a longer trip with race weekend traffic.

Stay in Graz
Graz is also a popular base for GP travellers, and it’s our first recommendation for your Grand Prix trip. There’s a good number of hotels to choose from, and the city hosts an F1 fan event with themed entertainment to keep your F1 party going even when you’re not at the circuit. The city plaza is Graz’s own F1 fan zone, with a giant screen you can follow the action on all weekend.
Staying in Graz gives you plenty of options for getting to the Red Bull Ring. You can…
• Have your own experienced driver chauffeur you around. Altitude Luxury Travel can arrange this for you.
• Take the train from Graz (or any major German or Austrian city) to Knittelfeld, which is the closest station to the circuit.
• Use the Eventbus bus service, which goes directly to the circuit. Again these services run from other major cities as well as Graz.
• Hire a car. Pick it up at the airport and go where you like during your F1 weekend.
• Take a helicopter shuttle. They’re available to and from Graz throughout the weekend, enabling you to skip the traffic.
A UNESCO City of Design, Graz is full of culture, beautiful architecture, and good shopping streets. Its famous attractions including a medieval armoury, the stunning Cathedral of Graz and the charming Glockenspielplatz. If you want to combine the Grand Prix with a great city break, Graz is a perfect choice.

Stay near the circuit
A Formula One Grand Prix is much more than just the race on Sunday. There are things to see and do at the venue all weekend, starting on the Thursday, so staying close to the circuit is a great way to soak it all up.
Even better, you won’t be battling traffic to get to and from your hotel. And you can save on transfer costs. You can walk to the circuit or cycle - there are bike parking facilities close to the circuit.
There are a handful of hotels close to the Red Bull Ring, so you’ll need to book early to get one. Landhotel Schönberghof is an especially good choice, being located on a hill that gives you spectacular views over the circuit. Fans and F1 personnel alike love this hotel - so you might spot some famous faces.
Or why not camps at one of the sites nearby? Many F1 travellers love this option. You can take your own tent or motorhome, or book a pre-erected tent.

Stay in an Austrian holiday home
Austria has a huge number of holiday chalets for hire, and they’re mostly geared towards the winter ski season. Since the Grand Prix takes place in June, off-season for skiing, you can often grab a great deal on a beautiful house.
There are many self-catered chalets located within an hour’s drive of the Red Bull Ring, and with multiple bedrooms they’re ideal for couples, families and groups of friends. You could even extend your F1 trip into a lakes and mountains summer holiday.
It’s a good idea to hire a car, which you can pick up at the airport and drive straight to your chalet. If you prefer not to drive to and from the Grand Prix, Altitude Luxury Travel can arrange car transfers by an experienced driver for you.

Compare the RedBull Ring grandstands and pick the perfect seats.
Grandstands at the Red Bull Ring are concentrated in two areas of the circuit.
The Main Grandstands are along the start/finish straight leading up to the first corner. These seats are a good choice if you like a good view of the team garages, the pre-race buildup, and the chequered flag. You’ll see the engineers making their final preparations, and the drivers walking to and from the grid. The cars will scream past you at full throttle, but you won’t see much wheel-to-wheel action.

The Red Bull Grandstands are located around Turn 2’s long, fast left and Turn 3’s extremely sharp right. You’ll see the cars braking into and navigating these corners, before peeling away into the third straight.
The Red Bull stands also have views of the circuit’s high-speed corners: Turns 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. F1 drivers love this section of the circuit, because these high-grip corners can be taken at speed. As Carlos Sainz put it: "Austria is an interesting track, with corners I enjoy. It's quite a short layout, but all the turns are very challenging and quite unique. The final sector is my favorite part, as it has many high-speed corners which are very cool."
Whichever ticket zone you choose, you’ll be limited to that zone throughout the weekend - so choose carefully!

In previous years, 3-day ticket holders were given access to a Pit Lane Walk on the Thursday. This is likely to continue in future years, and it’s a great way to soak up the F1 atmosphere and see the garages, teams and cars up-close.
